The Columbus Blue Jackets has been the successor of the Cleveland Barons in membership to the state of Ohio in ice hockey league. They have also served as the replacement to the Columbus Chill which has been in the league since 1991 to 1999. Along with significant history with Columbus, the team is included in the 2 newest teams in 2000, along with the Minnesota Wild. Moreover, they have joined in the NHL Expansion Draft in the same year in Alberta, particularly in Calgary. As the  rule of the draft suggests , twenty six of the twenty eight teams have been permitted to protect a single goaltender , 9 forward, 5 defensemen or 2 goaltenders, 7 forwards and 4 defensemen.

It was Rick Tabaracci who has been selected as the overall pick for the goaltender position. Tabaracci was then a member of the Colorado Avalanche. The Columbus Blue Jackets have also been fortunate to be a recipient of concessions granted by some franchises, particularly those who were not able to give protection to full rosters. With this, the San Jose Sharks has been exchanged with Jan Caloun, who has happened to be the 9th round pick in 2010 and 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft.  The conditional choice to Columbus has led to the agreement of the Shark not to opt for Evgeni Nabokov.

As such, the Columbus Blue Jackets celebrate for the realization of their first regular game in the season in October 7, 2000. It is only a sad thing for they have been defeated by the Chicago Blackhawks with a score of 5-3. With this, the member who has played a significant role for the team was Bruce Gardiner who had been responsible for the first goal of the franchise. Meanwhile, it was Geoff Sanderson who has embarked a great significant history in the team for making thirty goals.
